Chapter 12

Be Ye Friend?

We came out of the jump alive, and cheers erupted from those who knew what had just happened, followed more tentatively from those that didn’t.

“Bridge now,” I said to Ember, letting go of her. Then I legged it along the corridor, Ember a few steps behind.

She managed to get in touch with Acclo as we ran. “It worked?”

“Yes, Ember,” Acclo’s shaken voice came back. “But there is… damage,” they said hesitantly.

“Can we make it to the Haven?”

“Ah, there is no additional damage to the Uprising, and yes, we are very close.”

“We’re almost there,” Ember said as we approached the bridge.

I made it through the doors first. Everyone was looking at the main viewing screen, stopping briefly to look at us before returning to stare at the display. I followed their gaze. It appeared we had brought with us a sizeable portion of Prime Gilash’s compound with us, including the land it sat on. It now floated off in space along with a number of bodies and the smaller surface aircraft we’d fought against.

“Well shit,” I said with a slight smile. “You think this would have caused much of a problem with the planet itself?”

“Hard to say,” Elyek answered, coming over to us with a tired smile. “But probably not. Prime Gilash may need some time to recover though.”

“I hope so. In fact, I hope the bastard’s in there somewhere,” I said, pointing to the cleanly dissected building and hundred-yard stretch of land.

Elyek nodded. “It was an insane idea, Captain, and subverting the failsafes was no mean feat, but it saved us all and did serious damage to our enemies. So may I be the first to say well done. We should not have gotten away from there in the end. Only the risk you forced saved us. You truly are the Atekorne.”

I looked at Elyek puzzled. “The Ate-fucking-what now?”

They straightened and I saw the other Veilitians on the bridge watching me intently.

“The God of Chaos,” Elyek said flatly, and the other Veilitians dropped to one knee as did Elyek.

“NA! Not happening. Get the fuck up. I’m getting sick of this shit. I’m not the God of Chaos. If I was the god of anything it would be jammy bastardness.”

Calparr had arrived on the bridge while I’d been distracted. “HA! No, you are definitely a part of the great Zef if not the whole of him,” he laughed.

“Don’t you bloody start, man!”

“Start? The Torax who have come with you believed this very early in our time together.”

I shook my head, exhausted, and went to sit in the captain’s chair as we moved onto the Haven. “Guys, you’re all my nearest and dearest. You all know what I am like. I may be headed toward some crazy shit, but pinning names on me especially the God of Chaos is… well it’s just insane. For a start, I’m trying to build, not destroy. I mean why do you even want to follow me if you think I’m just going to fuck everything up?”

“Shaun,” Ember said gently from my side.
